RSO FEATURE OF THE WEEK: Filipino American Student Association

FASA is a student led organization that has a 95-year-old history with the University of Washington campus. The Filipino Club established in 1917 was organized by pensionados, Filipino students whose American education was subsidized by the US government. The Filipino Club for these pensionado students served as their social outlet. It was a place where these Filipino students were able to cope with things like culture shock, isolation and discrimination. Through out the 95 years of existing on campus, Filipino Club transformed into FilUnist Club. The Civil Right’s Movement lead to this organization transforming again into the Filipino Students Association (FSA). A demand for political activism started FSA’s movements of advocating for academic equality and demanding ethnic studies on campus. Since then, the organization has done nothing but grow. Grow with the same ideas of a Filipino community, cultural awareness, social advancements, political activism and academic excellence remaining. The organization today is now known as the Filipino American Student Association and it serves as an evolution and culmination of our past organizations and student leaders who have paved the way for students today, students like us, to succeed in the opportunities they fought for. That being said, FASA sa UW today, is still fighting. We are students that never stop planning, creating, motivating, providing, educating, agitating, inspiring and loving.

Upcoming Events

1) Filipino Night 2013

What: Three young naïve boys are shocked when they accidentally fall back in time to the 70s on UW campus. Unknowingly, they find themselves involved in a political hiatus between the students and the school board, but with a little love and sacrifice they learn the strength of student empowerment and help make the changes that affect all of us at the University today.

The Last Comic Standing Competition will be held Friday Jan 25, 2013. From the online audition video submissions, FASA and PNI will chose 10 auditions to perform in front of an audience and a panel of judges including Rex Navarrete. The judges favorite and the audience favorite from The Last Comic Standing will then be invited to dinner after Friday’s show with Rex Navarrete and the Comedy Night committee. The sisters of Chi Sigma Alpha are passionate, dedicated young women from diverse backgrounds who strive to develop and strengthen their skills in academics, leadership, and service through the unbreakable bond of sisterhood.

Annual Events
- Our annual Halloween Party called “Asylum” which we collaborate with Lambda Phi Epsilon. We hold this club event at around the Halloween weekend as a fundraiser event.
It is also a way for us to promote awareness for the philanthropies that we support, which are the Make-a-Wish Foundation and UW’s Experimental Education Unit (EEU).

RSO FEATURE OF THE WEEK: Vietnamese Student Association

“In our renowned mission to preserve the pride and nationalism of a colorful heritage, we are the bridge uniting two worlds and two generations at the University of Washington. At the same time, we strive to reach out towards our community by embracing its diversity and keeping our own doors open. We celebrate our awareness of: delectable pho fit for kings, angelic women in ravishing ao dai’s, non la’s that serve as a symbol of not only agriculture but an important aspect of grace and tradition, hit musical entertainment by “Paris by Night” that brings the whole family together, and the significance of the most important holiday called Tet. We are Vietnamese Americans. We are students. We are an association. We are the Vietnamese Student Association at UW. We are VSAUW.”
The Vietnamese Student Association at the University of Washington has unanimously voted to set forth the following principles and path to which it will adhere in order to carry out its duties and also to honor its past legacy.
1. To uphold and promote the Vietnamese culture and tradition.
2. To build a strong and thriving VSA at the University of Washington.
3. To lead and to help students at UW adapt to college life.
4. To participate in those activities, within the surrounding communities, that are related to the Vietnamese roots and heritage.

Annual Events

Thanksgiving Dinner – Every year, around Thanksgiving time, VSA UW collaborates with other VSAs from the region, notably Western Washington and Seattle University, to hold a Thanksgiving Dinner. Before the dinner, we also have a Turkey Bowl, a friendly competition of flag football.

Hoa Khoi Lien Truong Cultural Pageant – A biennial event that is about creating leaders in the community. It is a show that boasts the beautiful collegiate Vietnamese women of Washington. It showcases various talents from the VSA throughout the state of Washington community. It also allows participants to be more involved in the community in our projects, intertwining older generations with our generation. We will also incorporate other cultrual performances in the overall program.

Pho King – Every other year that Hoa Khoi is not held, we hold instead a male pageant show.

RSO FEATURE OF THE WEEK: Hong Kong Student Association

HKSA’s mission is to promote awareness of the Hong Kong culture, traditions, and heritage. We also serve as a platform for Cantonese students to gather together and improve each other’s experience in college.

The Hong Kong Student Association (HKSA) is a non-profit organization at the University of Washington in operation since 1984. HKSA serves to promote Hong Kong culture and heritage to all students who are interested, and provide a place where Cantonese students can interact with each other. Although we are under the title, “Hong Kong”, we also represent other Cantonese-speaking regions in China, including Guangzhou and Macau.

Annual Events
SingCon- SingCon is an annual singing contest held by HKSA towards the end of the
academic school year. It is the flagship event of HKSA and one of the largest
events among the student associations at UW. The event started as a karaoke
singing contest, but it has grown to a full concert along with the establishment of
the name SingCon. SingCon has been expanding rapidly in the past decade, with
increasing participants from many other Washington schools.

Orientation Camp- This is a new event that we did this year. We understand that finding and making friends in college is difficult, especially for students who are away from home. We take the theme of having “camp” where new students spend some time together playing games and do activities as a way for them to make new friends and allow them to bond with our HKSA officers as well. This event has been regarded as a great experience for many students who have made their closest friends from the event. We play many games which some include scavenger hunting combined with tag, and others such as those on teamwork like charades.

Cantonese Classes- One of HKSA’s main goals is to provide a place where Cantonese speakers can gather and interact with each other. Practicing the language is considered the most effective ways to learn more about a culture and that is why we provided free, weekly Cantonese Classes this year.

Chinese New Year Dinner- Chinese New Year is the most important festival for Chinese culture and HKSA celebrates this festive occasion annually with its members. We provide traditional food, a great atmosphere, fun games and amazing raffle prizes. We even follow the traditions and give out red packets to our members!

Culture Shock- Culture Shock is a relatively new event. We hosted the event
with CSA and ThaiSA last year. Culture Shock is a food fair that brings together different cultural foods and performances to promote cultural awareness on campus and share different aspects of Asian culture with everyone.

RSO FEATURE OF THE WEEK: Lambda Phi Epsilon

Since February 14, 1999, Lambda Phi Epsilon Alpha Zeta Chapter has crossed over a hundred brothers into the family. With over a decade of growth and experience, the brothers from the University of Washington have played key roles in the Asian American community on campus. With brothers active in Asian Student Commission organizations such as CSA, CSSA, FASA, HKSA, ISAUW, JSA, KhSA, KSA, KSU, TSA, TOSA, VSA, and more, the fraternity has contributed to the development of current Asian American student organizations. In addition, active brothers are involved in the changing the direction of student leadership on campus through heavy involvement with ASUW, STF, the UW Foundation Board, just to name a few. Lambdas have dominated at the helm of student leadership on campus as past ASC Directors, ASUW Senate Speakers, and UGC Founders and Presidents. The active brothers also find time to fulfill their interests and hobbies in hip hop dancing, public service, athletic training, competitive gaming, audio productions, dating, photography, poker, hiking, etc. Lambda Phi Epsilon was the first ever Asian American fraternity to be established on the University of Washington campus in Seattle and continues to set high standards for brotherhood, leadership, and philanthropy for other Asian interest fraternities that followed.

RSO FEATURE OF THE WEEK: alpha Kappa Delta Phi

Alpha Kappa Delta Phi was established at the University of California at Berkeley in the fall of 1989 and recognized by the College Panhellenic Association on February 7, 1990. The founding sisters: Susan Kim, Fannie Pon, Jill Yoshimura, and Reina Yuan, dedicated themselves to establishing a strong and lasting organization which would provide Asian American women the opportunity to participate in the Greek system. Soon after being recognized by the College Panhellenic Association the founding sisters brought together a diverse group of women who shared with them the goals of sisterhood, scholarship, and leadership. These ideals were to later set the foundation for alpha Kappa Delta Phi’s purpose.

The expansion of alpha Kappa Delta Phi into the Pacific Northwest began in 1997 with the formation of the alpha Kappa Delta Phi University of Washington charter pledge class and issuance of the official charter. In the Spring of 1998 Rica Lee Bailey, Kathy Chia, Bernadette Connor, Binh Le Dang, Shirley Fung, Courtney Hu, Teresa Lo, Debbie Shih, Lizz Tran, and Teresa Vong all came together to form the charter class at the University of Washington. aKDPhi has since been recognized as the largest international Asian American interest sorority.
