The ASC is teaming up with United Way of King County and thousands of people across the country to be part of the nationwide day of service that honors Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy of compassion. This will be our first time ever coming together as a commission to serve on MLK Day, January 21, 2013. Melissa Yang is a California-born, Hmong American. As a first generation college student, she is a senior majoring in Communications and minoring in Diversity. Her vision for the ASC is to build a community which fosters appealing leadership opportunities for student growth and self-responsibility through social, community, and civic engagement. Previously, she studied abroad in Italy to research ethnography and the relationship between culture and communication. Mel also served as the Vice President of the Hmong Student Association and as a Team Leader for Jumpstart, an AmeriCorps program, teaching in South Seattle. In her spare time, she enjoys salsa dancing, volleyball and playing the guitar.
